Albertans are invited to the 14th annual Police and Peace Officer Memorial Day to pay tribute to the province’s police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty.
The ceremony takes place on Sunday, September 30, at 1 pm on the Alberta Legislature grounds.
“These officers died while serving Albertans and making our communities safer,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “There is no nobler action than sacrificing oneself for the greater good.”
This past summer, Community Peace Officer Rod Lazenby became the 97th police and peace officer since 1876 to give his life in the line of duty in Alberta. His name, etched on a bronze dove, will be added to Alberta’s Pillar of Strength monument.
Families, friends, and the public are invited to join Lieutenant Governor Donald Ethell, Minister Denis, and members of the provincial law enforcement community to commemorate the men and women who died serving Albertans.
The ceremony takes place near the band shell at the southeast corner of the legislature grounds. It starts with a parade near the bus terminal on 107 Street just south of 99 Avenue, traveling south on 107 Street toward the ceremony site.
This day coincides with the national Police and Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony held at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
