Pincher Creek's Stuckey family

Front row: Arthur, Herald, Richard, Margaret, Samuel , and Grandpa
Richard (Dick) and Margaret married in Luther county, Ontario in 1882 and had three boys. Samuel (1883) , Aylmer (1885 ) who died in 1889 and Percy in 1889. Dick joined a brother Samuel in Nelson B.C. and became a partner with Samuel in a sawmill in 1890. Dick brought his wife and family to Nelson in 1991 and another brother Lewis joined them. While in Nelson four more boys were born to Dick and Margaret: Wilfred (1892 ), Stanley (1894 ), Lewis Rodney (1895), and Arthur in 1898.  Dick's brother Lewis married in Nelson in 1899.  Lewis and Dick left Nelson and filed for side by side homesteads in the Chipman District near Pincher Creek in 1898. A seventh son for Dick and Margaret, Harold,  was born in Pincher Creek on February 1, 1906.

Dick left the farm in 1909 and lived in Calgary during the war years and then went on to operate a garage in Duchess in 1920. In 1924 Dick and family moved back to Pincher Creek.  Lewis,  Dick's brother, stayed on the farm and his decendants are still living on the original homestead to this day. Dick and Margaret celebrated their 60th anniversary in the old Fram Hall on April 12, 1942. All seven boys and their families were present.

The other four boys of Richard and Margaret moved into different areas of Alberta and B.C.  Wilfred lived in Rosemary and then Calgary. He retired to Hope B.C.  Lewis married Ruth Thomas, daughter of Charles Thomas,  a Utopia homesteader. Lewis did spend most of his working life in the Vancouver area. He retired there and one of his daughters remained their as well. Many of the Thomas relatives still live in Pincher Creek and surrounding areas today.  Gordon homesteaded in Ground Birch B.C. and retired in Victoria,B.C. Arthur, also known as Shorty, spent his life in Calgary and some of his descendants live in Brooks at this time. The history of the original Samuel Stuckey who came west first and was joined by both brothers, Richard and Lewis, is completely unknown .

The only descendants of Dick and Margaret and their boys to remain in the Pincher Creek district are:

  • Dale Stuckey and family eldest son of Harold, who was  the youngest son of Dick and Margaret.
  • Sharron Scott and family, grand daughter of Samuel , who was the eldest son of Dick and Margaret.
  • Elizabeth Stuckey, wife of Gordon, second son of Samuel , who was the eldest son of Dick and Margaret.
  • Mary Stuckey, wife of William (Midge), third son of Samuel, who was the eldest son of Dick and Margaret.

Thanks Joanne. My name is Richard Luxton and I believe that Margaret may have been my Grandfathers sister. Can you confirm that her maiden name was Luxton. My grandfather, Richard Luxton, was born in Grand Valley Ontario and immigrated to Australia sometime at the turn of the last century. I work for Chevron and frequently visit Calgary .. decided to type in Margaret Stuckee and found the photo. If Margaret was originally a 'Luxton' then I may have found a few long lost cousins ..
