Old fashioned barn dance to be held Metis style
Toni Lucas, Pincher Creek Voice
Starting July 29 and running until August 1, Metis Nation Local 1880 will be running the Asihawak Family Music and Cultural Camp in co-operation with the Great Canadian Barn Dance in Hillspring.
The camp offers those that attend the chance to learn lessons on a number of different instruments including violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion and guitar ranging from beginner to advanced from skilled instructors.
There will be performance workshops and the chance to show off newly learned abilities at nightly performances and the finale concert.
This will give a unique chance to learn more of the Metis culture. The Metis culture is a blended one, arising from the European pioneers settling with local Native American inhabitants.
The Metis people placed a great cultural and social emphasis on family values, and living with the natural world around them. Something that the Metis people brought from both cultures was a love of music and dance that is still evolving today.
Metis instructors and elders will be available for teaching in crafts, bannock making, beading, voyageur canoeing, the making of medicine bags, and other areas that were important to the cultural development of this unique Canadian people.
To find out more about the music camp or to sign up for the classes go to www.gcbd.ca or call 1-866-626-3407.
