On July 4, 2011 at approximately 1:00 pm, Okotoks RCMP responded to a call of a serious motor vehicle collision on highway 7 approximately 4 kilometers west of Okotoks. A 20 year old female with family ties to the Town of Okotoks was cycling eastbound along highway #7. The cyclist experience some riding difficulty and ended riding into the eastbound lane of traffic. A grey Honda Ridgeline that was traveling eastbound struck the cyclist.
The cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene, none of the occupants of the Honda were injured. The deceased's father was riding a bicycle with his daughter at the time of the collision. Several people who witnessed the collision remained on scene to provide statements to the investigators, and rendered first aid to the involved persons. The RCMP would like to thank them for all of their assistance.
Highway #7 was closed in both directions for approximately 2 hours, but has since been re-opened to alternating traffic. Police are warning users of highway #7 west of Okotoks to expect some delays for several more hours, as the Forensic Collision Reconstructionist completes his examination of the scene. It is still very early on in the investigation to comment on charges, and the Okotoks RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Police. Police are with holding the name of the deceased at this time to ensure that all next of kin notifications have been completed.
