Hawks Rugby season ends with a great game

Rugby wrap-up, Coach Randy Whitehead

On Wednesday May 30, 2012 the Matthew Halton Girls rugby team traveled to Lethbridge's Winston Churchill school for a semifinal game.  The winner would earn a berth to the zone final.  The Hawks played a great game.  The first half saw the Hawks playing hard, but due to a few too many penalties which Winston was able to capitalize on. the Hawks were down 12 to 0 at the half.

The Hawks started the second half even stronger than the first half, and some great  constant pressure in Winston’s end found Alyssa Barbero diving across for the first try for Halton.  About 5 minutes later Emma Lowry was able to drive in and touch it down for Halton’s second try.  Winston respond with some good pressure of their own that forced the Hawks deep into their own end, but Emma Lowry was able to pick up a drop passed and run 80 meters for her second try of the game. With Alyssa Barbero’s convert the Hawks were up 17 to 12 with about 10 minutes left in the game.

The Halton Hawks Rugby squads gave us a great season this year.

The last 10 minutes was back and forth action.  The Hawks committed a couple of penalties in the last minute that Winston was able to take advantage of, and with that were able to dive across the line and score at the end of regulation play.  The convert was good. Unfortunately, this put an end to the Hawks' season.

It was a tough way to end the season but I am so proud of my girls and the way they played. I talked to them a lot about 'no regrets' and leaving everything on the rugby pitch and they demonstrated that on this day, they played amazing.
