Grizzly killed near Coleman
Chris Davis, Pincher Creek Voice
On Monday, March 19 a landowner shot and killed a grizzly bear on his property, located about 20 minutes northwest of Coleman, Alberta.
According Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security communications spokesman Brendan Cox, an investigation by a Fish and Wildlife bear response team confirmed the shooting was an act of self defence, and no charges will be laid.
Environmentalists in the area have expressed concerns about the shooting of this grizzly, including concerns about accessibility to information about the incident.
"It's unfortunate that this grizzly was killed," said Cox. "There were no ear tags to suggest that it had been handled in the past."
"We will continue to advise the public to be cautious when in bear country, and that means following Bear Smart practices and carrying bear spray," Cox said. "If anyone has concerns about bear activity, safety, property, or livestock concerns they should contact the nearest Fish and Wildlife office at 310-0000." That number is toll-free in Alberta. Cox also said that anyone who suspected a poaching incident should call the 24-hour Report a Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.
