At least five area residents will be taking part in the Rick Hansen relay as it passes through the Fort Macleod area on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, February 21 and 22. Debbie Reed, Tia Liebrecht, Kendall Oliver, Joanne Elliott Paton, and Madison Provost have all been selected to take part. Each will complete a 250 metre leg of the journey, which retraces the Canadian segment of Hansen's original Man In Motion World Tour 25 years ago.
This silver anniversary relay started on August 24, 2011 at Cape Spear, Newfoundland and is travelling west to finally end in British Columbia. The relay will take nine months to complete and will cover 12,000 kilometres, visiting over 600 communities in every province and territory in Canada.
Participants can walk or run their 250 metre segment of the event, passing the original Man in Motion medal on to the next participant at the end of their turn. Each will get a memorial replica medal created by the Royal Canadian Mint, toques, and a Nike jacket to remember the event. More than 7,000 participants will cover 12,000 kilometres before the event is concluded.
