Shell drilled its first well in the Waterton community in 1957, discovering sour natural gas and condensate. Construction of the Waterton Complex followed in 1960 and by January 21,
1962 the plant produced its first sales gas into the plant for sale via pipeline.
Since that time, the Shell Waterton field has grown and developed to its current state of more than 50 producing gas wells and over 200 kilometres of operating pipelines that carry the gas to the Shell Waterton Gas Plant. The Waterton Gas plant treats this raw gas to produce a clean-burning fuel which is used for homes and businesses in Canada and the United States.
