It looks like rocking weather for the curling turkey-shoot that will be held at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) on Sunday, January 15, at 1 pm. "It is an outdoor pond, so it is weather dependent," said General Manager Tracy Glen. With strong chinooks over the holidays, there was concern about the ice. Glen pointed out that the weather should be just blow zero, with almost no wind on the Sunday, according to recent forecasts.

In partnership with the Pincher Creek Curling Club, this event is to help raise funds for a new curling facility. Vice President of the Curling Club Rick Visser says that it "should be a lot of fun." Although there will be no entrance fee, to throw the rocks will cost $5.00 for three rocks, and those funds will be split between KBPV and the curling club. There is a special twist on this event: The beloved "Pioneer Rock" a home-made rock that was used in some of the early curling games in Pincher Creek can be thrown for this tournament. "There are no other rocks on the ice during a turkey shoot, so there is no real chance that it will be damaged," said Cyr. To throw this rock will cost $5.00 per throw, and gives a chance to touch a bit of history.

One and all are invited to this event, and have the chance to support both the Pioneer Village, and the Curling Club. Even if you have never curled before, this is an opportunity to do something unique. First prize is a turkey, and a special prize will be given to the person that comes the closest with the pioneer rock. Partially sponsored by Pincher Creek Co-op and Bloomin' Inn, there will be a concession and refreshments available during this event. This is a special opportunity to establish bragging rights for having curled outdoors.

Curling Club to start league play Monday

Visser was disappointed that the club will only have a partial season, but was thrilled to be able to finish the season using the local facility. The Pincher Creek Curling Club will be starting league play this coming week starting Monday, January 16.
