Chinook Lanes holds Family Twosome Tournament

Toni Lucas, Pincher Creek Voice

On Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29 Chinook Lanes hosted families in the Youth Bowling Canada (YBC) Family Twosome Tournament weekend.  Although the official categories were Mother/Daughter, Mother/Son Father/Daughter, and Father/Son there were also aunts, uncles and grandparents present representing their families.

Twenty-four kids in the YBC came with their family members to try to get their best Pins Over Average, (POA).

Chinook Lanes Manager Denise Somerville watched over a fast moving, energetic group.  "This is our highlight YBC event of the year.  It is the most popular," she said.  Somerville shared that part of the charm of this event is that "it gets the family out and involved .  The parents get to be partnered with their kids while they are playing."

Bowling is loud, fast paced, and occasionally raucous.  The kids were excited and engaged in having fun, and doing their best.  I talked with a few between their throws.  Almost all of them said that what they liked the most was that they were out playing with their family member as a partner.  According to the way the kids acted what they enjoyed the most was an old fashioned day out with their family.  There were plenty of thumbs ups and high fives, and the occasional consoling arm wrapped around shoulders from both young and old.

Grandma Bert was teamed with Mickey Lagrandeur.  She said that this was her second year of being in the tournament.  "It is a lot of fun to get out with the kids.  This is my favourite yearly event with the kids.  It involves all of us."

There is an aspect of theatricality to bowling. Everyone is watching the action that is happening at the far end of the room.  Each lane is watching their own movie as they create it.  There is drama, comedy, action, heartache, and  there can be some great stories.
