The Willow Valley Trophy Club, which started in 1949, held its annual show in the Pincher Creek Community Hall on Saturday, January 14, 2012.
Trophy plaques were proudly displayed at the front of the hall, bearing the names of the previous winners. Today decided the winners that would join the ranks of sportsmen that are added to the list of the elite every year.  The Boone and Crockett Club had official scorers to judge the trophies.

Guest speaker Jeremy Banfield speaks to the crowd about cougars

The Community Hall was full and people milled throughout, looking at the trophies that lined the walls.  Booths upstairs sold and displayed taxidermy, knives, bows, leather work, meat, woodwork, and more.  Information on nature conservancy was available. Many of those that hunt are also passionate about saving the environment, something the club encourages, as well as ethical hunting practices.

Jeremy Banfield
Jeremy Banfield from the University of Alberta delivered a fascinating lecture on cougars.  Most of his research took place in the Beaver Mines area, where he has been tracking populations of the large cats for over a year.  After collecting this data, Banfield has been doing data analysis at the University based on it.  During his speech, he handed around a collar that is the same as those that were used to track the large cats.

"The point of this study was prey composition, and movement," Banfield explained afterward.  "This area has agriculture and ranching right next to protected area and parks.  We need to know more about the actions of predators, and their prey composition.  What is their interaction with livestock?  Is there any?"  Banfield is classifying cougar hunting behaviours.  His goal is to develop a model of predation. By cataloging traveling, feeding and resting behaviours he will be increasing the understanding of this large feline.  Banfield will be finishing his masters research next year and will have enriched our area, other researchers, and the world with this hard won knowledge.

Tim Ewing
Tim Ewing, who is a proprietor with Doug Ross of Back Country Butchering in Cowley,  had entries in Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, and Antelope.  He won first place for his antelope in the Bow Hunting category.

Roxanne Debroux
Roxanne Debroux gained second place for Typical Whitetail, Rifle.  "I shoot for meat, but as a member, I thought it was worth entering for this one," she said, standing by her trophy, (pictured lower left on board behind her).  Debroux is proud to be a member of the Willow Valley Trophy Club.
