The RCMP at Claresholm Detachment received a complaint of gunshots fired at approximately 3:30 am today, December 15th, 2011. RCMP investigators who arrived on the scene, which is approximately 1 km north of Claresholm, in the northbound lanes of Highway #2, found two vehicles and two deceased persons, one female and one male.
There was an additional two injured persons who were removed to hospital for treatment. One of these, a male, has since died at hospital. The remaining female has undergone medical treatment and is expected to recover. Names and home towns of all person cannot be released at this time as family notifications have to be completed, but all are in their early 20s. The relationships between the deceased and the injured is under investigation.
This appears to be the Murder of three persons and suicide of the perpetrator. All deaths and injuries are believed to be from gunshots. Autopsies will be utilized in confirming the cause of deaths.
The suicide is of a male person, the murder of two persons (one female at the scene and a male who died at hospital) and the injury of a fourth person is a female who is currently in hospital.
The scene has been contained and is under examination by the RCMP Major Crimes unit investigators and personnel from the RCMP Forensic Identification Section.
As the investigation involves an unexplained sudden death the investigators are considering this as suspicious and are therefore investigating this as a homicide. All possible motives for these deaths are under consideration.
The highway has been closed in both directions and will remain so until the scene examination is complete, which will is expected to extend at least into the evening hours today.
