Health Minister orders examination of diagnostic imaging and pathology testing in Alberta

Alberta Health and Wellness Minister Fred Horne released the following statement regarding diagnostic imaging and pathology testing in Alberta.

“In light of the Alberta Health Services’ review of diagnostic imaging in Drumheller announced earlier today, and with two other reviews on pathology testing already underway by the Health Quality Council of Alberta, I have ordered a thorough examination of medical quality assurance processes as they relate to diagnostic imaging and pathology testing. This is a proactive, system-wide exercise that will provide me and all Albertans with the necessary assurance that system-wide checks and balances to prevent errors are in place and operating as intended.
Government through the Minister of Health and Wellness is accountable to our citizens for patient safety and quality in our health system. While we can and should be reassured that the errors were detected, these three incidents have caused stress for patients, families and staff alike and Albertans deserve answers. I apologize to those who have been affected.

I have directed my department, Alberta Health Services, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and the Health Quality Council of Alberta to work together to recommend a plan of action. External reviewers with recognized expertise in this area will be involved. Although we are in the early stages of setting up this process, I will provide Albertans with specific details in the coming weeks about the scope of the examination, the timelines and the expected outcomes.

Albertans can and should remain confident in the care they receive. We have hard working, highly skilled and dedicated health care professionals who provide quality care every day. The provincewide review I am announcing today is a necessary and important step in our efforts to continually improve the services we provide to Albertans.”
