St. Michael's vs Livingstone - JV and Senior Girls Volleyball action

St. Michael's school was host tonight, October 12, to a classic showdown between JV and SR Dragons and Lundbreck's Sabres girls volleyball teams. The intense rivalry between the two teams was once again apparent, and it made for great volleyball.

     First up, three sets of JV matches. The JV Dragons edged the Sabres 25-21 in the first match, but lost the next two, 22-25 and 19-25. The two teams were very evenly matched, as reflected by how close the scores were. Victor: Lundbreck Sabres, 2 games to 1.

     The Senior Girls matches were also filled with exciting action, with many long volleys between the two teams. The ball got hung up in the rafters a couple of times, as if it was afraid of being spiked anymore. Both teams excel at setting up power shots, but in the end the Sabres again emerged victorious. Set one saw the Dragons lose 15-25. In set two they rebounded, winning 25-9. Apparently running out of steam, the Dragons lost to the Sabres in the third set, 12-25.   Former Dragon champ Emma Lowry now plays for the Sabres, and was one of the dominating forces in tonight's action, her former team-mates exhorting each other "Don't be afraid of Emma!" more than once.

     All in all, an exciting evening of heartfelt action. The Sr. Girls Sabres and Dragons will meet each other again on Wednesday, October 26, at Livingstone School in Lundbreck. It will be interesting to see how the two teams have developed in the intervening time.

     On a disappointing note, Matthew Halton High School is not participating in volleyball this year, with some parents telling me the price tag was just too high.
