Redford names Peter Watson as Deputy Minister of Executive Council
Government of Alberta news release
Public service veteran Peter Watson will serve as Deputy Minister of Executive Council under Premier Alison Redford. Watson formerly served as Deputy Minister of Energy and Deputy Minister of Environment. He replaces Brian Manning.
“Peter is known for working with stakeholders and taking a collaborative approach. He also brings extensive experience in two key files: energy and environment. I look forward to working with Peter to advance Albertans’ priorities,” said Premier Redford.
“I am honoured to have been chosen by Premier Redford for a job that I know will be both challenging and exciting. I’m also grateful to have the opportunity to work with what I believe is the best public service in Canada on an ambitious agenda for change,” Watson said.
Redford also thanked Brian Manning, who is leaving government after a long career in public service, including the past 15 years in Alberta. “Brian has been a dedicated public servant who provided a steady hand and sage counsel through difficult times. I thank him for his service to Albertans, and wish him all the best in his future plans.”
“I’m very proud of my 38 years of public service in two provinces,” said Manning. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with great people on a wide variety of issues, and I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
Executive Council supports the Premier and members of Cabinet in strategic and business planning and policy coordination, and provides leadership to the Alberta Public Service.
