Notes from the Huddlestun Drop-in Centre

George Huddlestun, Columnist, Pincher Creek Voice

October is here whether we like it or not, so to the drawing board we go to set up interesting programs for the seniors.

Basic training in computer skills is available  for four or five seniors willing to commit to two afternoon lessons per week, in partnership with Matthew Halton High School. The computers are supplied in-house and will give the students an opportunity to pass on the skills they have learned to those that need them. Please phone Joyce McFarland at 403-627-5224 if interested so that she can communicate with the school for start-up time etc.

We need Shuffleboard players as we have a beautiful shuffleboard at the centre that needs to be used. If interested please call 403-627-5768 and leave your name and phone number and I will be back to you with further info. Harold Burgess will organize and play if a few teams can be found.

Along with Whist on Monday, Pool and 500 on Tuesday, coffee and Duplicate Bridge on Wednesday, and Crib on Thursday, there is still time for interesting projects or other games such as Wee Bowling etc. I think it would be a good idea if a team or two from Whispering Winds and the same from Crestview Lodge and Vista Village joined in for Shuffleboard and the Wee games, and came down to the Centre once a week for these games. Let me know what you think about this or anything else you may have on your mind.

The Centre hosted a very successful Crib Tournament on Saturday, October 1. Teams from Lethbridge, Cardston, Bellevue, Blairmore, and Hill Spring were visiting guests. The Pincher Creek Co-op donated cookies and donuts which were really enjoyed by everyone there. Thank you Co-op for your generous donation. Five games were played before the lunch break which was delicious Lasagna, garden salad, buns, with Ice Cream and Saskatoon’s for desert. This was all prepared by Carol Van Gelder with helping hands to dish it up for the hungry card players. Thank you so much Carol for your commitment of time and expertise in preparing the food. Five more games were played in the afternoon finishing about 2 pm. The winners were two locals: Ida Bond and Maxine Haug from Crestview Lodge. Second place went to Vickie and Gloria from Lethbridge, third prize when to Vernie and Joe Bruder of Pincher Creek, and the fourth prize went to Jack and Shirley Rumsey of Pincher Creek. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the Tournament.
