Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is holding their 29th annual Fundraising Banquet in Pincher Creek to happen this Saturday evening, October 15 starting at 6 pm, in the Pincher Creek Community Hall.  The cause of saving the wetlands profoundly affects all people on this planet, and this benefit mixes a good cause with good fun.

I attended last year, and I have to say it was a great evening filled with great food, fun, and excitement.  Organizers worked tirelessly at getting all the lovely items for the silent and live auctions, selling raffle tickets, and there were a number of games and draws displayed at the front of the Community Hall.  On display around the room, there was was beautiful art in print, original and sculpture form.   There were technological marvels, tools, hunting gear, household items such as furniture sets, and a large barbecue.  Services such as windshield replacement also were perused by the excited participants.  Being a rural area that boasts many championship hunters, a beautiful rifle and crossbow were excitedly bid upon last year, as were some autographed hockey memorabilia.  The excitement of the auction had some good-natured rivalry of repeated bids, some that went down to the final minute.  The true winner in the outcome of these bidding wars were the wetlands.  The auction and raffles made it that many people did not leave the hall empty handed.

Ducks Unlimited Canada started in 1937, during the dustbowl era.  Noticing lower numbers of migratory birds a small group of sportsmen started the organization.  They created the mission statement: Habitat Conservation.  On their website, the have emblazoned the statement "Filling the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever".  Following the directives set down so many years ago, this group has helped to save many wetlands that otherwise would have been developed.  They take a continent wide approach and a world view of saving the wetlands.  Now we recognize the importance of these special habitats. They act as a necessary habitat for biodiversity.   The wetlands to act as a filtration system for land and underground water systems, and are vital to the needs of all life, that of fresh, clean water.
