Southern Alberta RCMP receive numerous calls for animals in distress

As the warm weather has finally arrived in southern Alberta, the RCMP would like to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving animals in a vehicle, no matter how briefly. The interior of a vehicle heats quickly, and can be significantly warmer than the outside temperature; an animal can become heat distressed very quickly in warm weather.

The RCMP throughout southern Alberta have received numerous calls recently from concerned people about pets left in vehicles. Pet owners could potentially be charged under the Criminal Code for Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal if an animal is left in a vehicle without cool circulating air.

Please plan to leave your pet at home if you will be out of your vehicle. It will be healthier for your pet.
