Crime Prevention – Personal Safety

Personal safety is paramount to crime prevention as well as everyone’s general well-being. Personal safety includes many simple concepts that start on an individual level and applies to all ages. Crime prevention and personal safety have a lot to do with self-awareness.

Everyone is different with respect to physical proportions, knowledge, abilities, and experience. Know yourself, recognize your limitations or potential short-comings and do something about it. Regardless of who you are the first step to personal safety is confident body language. Although random attacks are very rare, how you carry yourself and your posture can make you less of a target. Walk with a purpose, stand-up straight, keep your head and eyes up, and above everything else be aware of your surroundings.

The following are a few additional tips to protecting your personal safety:

  • Safety in numbers; Use the buddy system whenever possible
  • Stay in well-lit areas; Don’t take shortcuts through dark or deserted areas
  • Travel light; Don’t carry large amounts of money or valuables with you.
  • Communication; Carry a cell phone or change to make a call in an emergency situation. Let someone know where you’re going and your estimated time of arrival.
  • Know your destination; Be familiar with the areas that you frequent, and if traveling to the unknown prepare yourself ahead of time by consulting maps/GPS or others who are familiar.

Personal and public safety is everyone’s responsibility – play an active role in crime prevention!
