Olds RCMP
On November 10, 2014 at about 10:30 A.M. RCMP Olds Detachment were dispatched, along with local Olds Fire Department and EMS to an MVC on Highway 27 West of Olds near Range Road 22.
Initial investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Astro Van traveling East bound lost control as it climbed a slight grade. The van went toward the South ditch then corrected back onto the highway but slid sideways into the West bound lane of travel and was then struck, on the passenger side, by an oncoming Ram 3500 pick up truck. The van came to rest in the middle of the highway facing North while the pick up went into the North Ditch just off the shoulder of the road facing North.
Despite efforts by responding emergency services providers the driver of the Astro Van was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Van is a female resident of Sundre. Police will not be releasing the identity of the driver. The driver of the pick-up sustained minor injuries.
Road conditions were typical of what would be expected following a recent snow fall; being partly covered with snow/ice. Alcohol and Speed are not considered to be factors in this collision. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.
No charges are anticipated. The investigation is ongoing with support from the RCMP Collision Analyst. Traffic was diverted around the scene for approximately 3 hours.
Police remind motorists that winter driving is upon us. Road surface and weather conditions can change drastically as you travel Alberta highways to your destinations. Allow plenty of time to reach your destinations and drive accordingly to the conditions.

Temporary lockdown at school and hospital in Vegreville
Vegreville RCMP
During the early afternoon of November 6th, 2014, Vegreville RCMP received calls of a potential suicidal male armed with a rifle in the area of St. Martin's School and St. Joseph's General Hospital. RCMP acted quickly, deploying all available resources. RCMP informed both St. Martin's School and St. Joseph's General Hospital of the potential threat. Lock down procedures were then implemented as precautions. A Vegreville residence in the area of St. Martin's School was entered as part of the investigation and several firearms were seized. The male was eventually located by RCMP outside of Vegreville, who had departed the area just prior to RCMP being notified of the incident. As soon as there was no longer a threat, both the School and Hospital were advised and reverted back to normal operations.
The RCMP would like to reassure the public that there are currently no threats to public safety and that the lock down procedures were put in place as a precaution to ensure the public's safety while a potentially dangerous situation was unfolding. The RCMP would also like to reassure the public that no direct threats were made towards either the School or the Hospital, but due to the proximity of the these two locations to the initial call, as well as the information that was available to RCMP at the time, precautions were put into place for the safety of everyone.
The RCMP investigation is on going. The RCMP would like to thank St. Martin's School and St. Joseph's General Hospital whose actions were seamless during the lock down procedure.
