St. Albert student dealers busted by DARE officer

St. Albert RCMP

Just after 8:00 am yesterday morning, a RCMP officer on his way to a school to teach DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), noticed 2 teen girls near an outdoor arena and smelled the odour of marijuana. As a result of his interaction with these girls, he seized 24 baggies of marihuana from them and a marihuana bong. The baggies of marihuana are packaged in the same way that drug dealers prepare drugs for sale. The two girls, who are high school students, are being dealt with by the RCMP, their high school and their parents.

The two girls will not be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act as they are under 18, and the high school where they are registered will not be released in order to protect their privacy.

St. Albert RCMP caution parents to talk to their youth about strategies for resisting pressure to use drugs since marihuana and other drugs are part of society now. All schools in the Edmonton region work to keep drugs out of their buildings, and most students do not want drugs in their school and do not get involved with drugs. St. Albert RCMP have School Resource Officers attached to all local high schools and these officers work in partnership with the St. Albert Drug Unit and the General Duty RCMP officers to address any reports of drugs around our schools.

St. Albert RCMP Drug Unit is interested in any information you may have about drug trafficking. Call the St. Albert RCMP Drug Tip Line at 780-460- DRUG (3784) and provide information. You will remain confidential if you wish.

If you have any information about drug trafficking or any crime, call the St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers. At Crime Stoppers, you do not need to reveal your identity. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to Call Display, Call Trace or tape any phone calls. If your information leads to an arrest, you qualify for a cash award up to $2,000.00. We want your tip, not your name. Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

“Bank Investigator” scam in Red Deer

Red Deer RCMP

In less than a week, Red Deer RCMP have received three reports concerning senior citizens who were targeted by the “Bank Investigator” scam. In this scam, the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be with their bank, who says they are investigating an internal theft. The scammer then asks their victim to help them catch the thief by withdrawing money from their bank account and bringing it to a meeting place away from the bank the scammer claims to represent.

All three victims were defrauded of several thousand dollars each. While the details of these calls may differ, this is a common scam that resurfaces regularly across the country; RCMP remind the public that no bank or other legitimate business will ever approach clients to ask for assistance in this way. People who receive calls such as these are asked to report them to police immediately.

RCMP encourage you to protect yourself from fraud by learning how to recognize it. Police further urge you to take the time to identify the people in your life who may be vulnerable to the stories spun by scammers, educate them about these scams and help them develop responses to persistent, sometimes bullying people on the other end of the phone. You may also want to encourage the vulnerable people in your life to lower their daily withdrawal limit at their bank. Helpful information on common scams and ways to protect yourself can be found at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Anyone with information that may assist the police in identifying or locating the person responsible for this crime is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403.343.5575. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or report it online at www.tipsubmit.com.
