2014 Pincher Creek and District 4-H Livestock Show and Sale

The 2014 Pincher Creek and District 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held at the Horseshoe Pavilion on Monday, May 26.  It was the first year that swine and beef were presented together in Pincher Creek.

Foothills Beef (Steers and Breeding Projects)

Timber Trails Beef (Steers and Breeding Projects)

The Breeding Projects show was held first, followed by the Market Steer show, finishing with the Swine Projects/Market Hog show.  Then a free beef dinner was offered to guests and participants, followed by the big finale, the evening Sale.

Justin Keeley kept things flowing smoothly as MC for the afternoon, before surrendering the mic and joining the auction team under the direction of auctioneer Frank Jenkins.  The auction team also included Barb Lagarde, Allan Lively, and Darren Shaw.

Fred Taylor

Cargill Beef Grader Fred Taylor proved to be one of the toughest market steer conformation judges in recent memory.  He graded the cattle by the book, letting the 4-H members and the crowd know exactly why he made the judgements he made, from the very valuable perspective of someone who has ascended to the top of his game by knowing the ins and out of his trade. He spoke of the high price of prime cuts, and said the consumer shopped based on price, which meant there would be "not enough hamburger this winter", making more reasonably sized cattle more preferable for the marketplace.

Market Steer showmanship judge Carol High from Claresholm (Past President Alberta Angus Association Board of Directors, President Southern Alberta 4-H Regional Council) also spent a significant amount of time sharing her valuable insights with the 4-H participants.  "These animals can feel what you're feeling," she said.  "Relax."

Evert Roelofsen

Evert Roelofsen was the Swine Project quality judge.  He's a large scale hog producer from the Fort Macleod area.  Karen Alexander was the Swine Project Showmanship and Grooming judge.  They both know what it takes to bring in the bacon.

Rod Sinclair

Shell Waterton's Rod Sinclair announced that Shell was donating $7000 to be split among the 4-H Clubs instead of buying as they have in the past, so that their contribution will be shared to the benefit of the 4-H community as a whole.  Pincher Creek Co-op secured the Grand Champion and Reserve, as they like to do every year, the first of three purchases for them at this sale.
