Charges laid in Calgary Animal Abuse investigation

The Calgary Humane Society has charged a man in relation to an animal abuse investigation where a dog and a cat were found deceased with their muzzles bound shut.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, the Calgary Humane Society’s Protection and Investigations Department was notified by the City of Calgary Animal Services that a deceased Siberian husky had been found in an alley in the 200 block of 99 Avenue S.E.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, the Humane Society was informed that a deceased black and white domestic short haired cat had been found in the same alley.

Both animals were taken to a local veterinarian for necropsy to determine the cause of death. It was determined that the Husky died from starvation and that the dog had been chronically malnourished. The veterinarian also determined the cause of death for the cat was asphyxia due to ligature strangulation following the infliction of multiple traumatic injuries to the head, tail and hind limbs.

With the assistance of the Calgary Police Service, a search warrant was executed on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at a residence in 9900 block of Bonaventure Drive S.E.

Following the lengthy investigation by the Calgary Humane Society’s Protection and Investigations Department, Nicolino Ivano CAMARDI, 19, has been charged with two counts of 445.1(1)(a) – wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

The Calgary Humane Society and the Calgary Police Service would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance in this investigation.

Towed pickup detaches from motor home on QEII

On May 2, 2014 at approximately 3:55 p.m. Innisfail Integrated Traffic Services was dispatched to a collision on the QEII Hwy just south of the Hwy 11A overpass.

A motor home towing a pickup was accelerating SB from Hwy 11A via the on-ramp onto the QEII Hwy, when the pickup became detached due to failure of the tow bars securing it to the motor home. The driverless pickup drove through the grass median between the on-ramp and the QEII Hwy before crossing both SB lanes of traffic on the QEII Hwy and colliding with the cable barrier system. There were no injuries or secondary collisions resulting. The cable barrier system, with several posts badly damaged, prevented the pickup from crossing the center median into NB traffic.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in Grande Prairie last week on Canada-wide warrants in connection with a fatal collision in Edmonton on January 22, 2104, that cost one man his life.

Calgary man charged in connection with Deerfoot dangerous driving incident

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in connection with a dangerous driving incident on Deerfoot Trail Friday morning.

At approximately 8:40 a.m., on Friday, May 2, 2014, police attempted to pull over a Chrysler 300 at Deerfoot Trail and 32 Avenue N.E., for a traffic infraction. The driver initially stopped, but when the officer approached the vehicle on foot, the vehicle sped away. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, police received reports of a vehicle that was speeding on the shoulder of southbound Deerfoot Trail. The vehicle entered the westbound 16 Avenue turnoff where it clipped a pick-up truck, and then smashed into the back of a minivan carrying a mother and two children. The family was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The minivan was then forced into another vehicle.

Several witnesses stopped to assist the occupants of both vehicles. As one of the witnesses approached the driver of the Chrysler, he saw the man grab a handgun and throw the weapon into the ditch and run from the scene. The witness went into the ditch and recovered the weapon, storing it in his truck as he then attended to the injured family. As he was doing so, the offender returned to the scene, opened the truck door and retrieved the weapon. He then ran into the ravine and was witnessed throwing the gun into the creek.

It's believed the original witness and at least one other person then followed the offender and was able to subdue him until officers arrived on scene.

The Calgary Fire Department Aquatics Team was able to locate the weapon in the waterway and it has now been sent away for testing.

Christian MUKELE, 24, of Calgary has been charged with:
  • s. 94(1) CC - Firearm: In Motor Vehicle

PSD Quanto honoured, inducted into Hall of Fame

This morning, Purina honoured fallen Police Service Dog (PSD) Quanto’s service and bravery by inducting him into its 46th Annual Purina Animal Hall of Fame. PSD Quanto died doing his job, after being stabbed in an altercation with a suspect in a criminal flight in October 2013.

Const. Matt Williamson, Quanto’s former handler, is in Toronto today to participate in the event, which will also honour four other animals for their actions taken to protect human lives.

“All of us at the Canine Section are honored by the recognition given to Quanto and Matt. We have had overwhelming support from the community and would like to thank everyone for their caring thoughts and words,” says Staff Sgt. Trevor Hermanutz of the EPS Canine Unit.

The remarkable stories gathered through the Animal Hall of Fame highlight the important role animals play in our lives, whether as companions, friends or while serving the community, says Susan Molenda, Vice President of Nestle Purina PetCare.

“While we received many inspiring stories from across the country, we were profoundly touched by the stories of this year’s inductees, including Police Service Dog Quanto, who gave his life to protect his team and the citizens of Edmonton,” says Molenda.
