The following is an overview of the nature of the complaints that the Pincher Creek Detachment received for the noted period. Note that the summary indicates what was reported to the police and may not have been substantiated.

Between 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 and today Monday, March 10, 2014 the Grande Prairie RCMP received 193 reports and/or calls for service, of which included:

Sylvan Lake RCMP have laid several charges in relation to an assault complaint reported to police on February 28, 2014. As a result of the complaint and subsequent investigation, police executed a Search Warrant at a residence on 48th Avenue in Sylvan Lake on March 7th, 2014 and recovered two restricted firearms.
Thomas James ROWLAND, 32 years old, of Sylvan Lake has been charged with 2 counts of unsafe storage of restricted firearms as well as one count of Assault. ROWLAND has been released from custody after a Bail Hearing and is set to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court next on March 26, 2014 at 8:30 a.m.
On March 6, 2014, Sylvan Lake RCMP located and arrested the person responsible for the Armed Robbery at the Bayshore Market which occurred on February 28, 2014. With the assistance of the public, a 15 year old Sylvan Lake youth (male) was located and arrested without incident.
The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
Robbery using a Firearm
Pointing a Firearm
using a Firearm while committing an Indictable offence
The youth has been remanded in custody and will make his next court appearance on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at the Red Deer Youth Justice Court.

Assault and Firearms charges in Sylvan Lake

Boy arrested for Armed Robbery in Sylvan Lake
The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with the following criminal offences:
Robbery using a Firearm
Pointing a Firearm
using a Firearm while committing an Indictable offence
The youth has been remanded in custody and will make his next court appearance on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at the Red Deer Youth Justice Court.
On the 7th of March at 1:27a.m., an Alberta Sheriff observed a male heading south on Highway 2 near Leduc Alberta, at 201 km/h. The male was stopped by the Alberta Sheriff and the Leduc RCMP were called in to assist. When speaking with the driver of the vehicle, he appeared to be showing signs of impairment and was arrested and transported to Leduc Detachment where he provided samples of his breath for analysis. The breath analyzed confirmed that the Driver was 3 times over the legal limit.
"This was a very dangerous situation that put both the male and the public's safety at risk" says Cpl. Alex DaSilva of the Leduc Integrated Traffic Unit. Road conditions at the time were icy and snow covered in some parts.
The 22 year old male from Leduc Alberta, has been charged with:
Dangerous Driving
Impaired Driving
Driving with a blood alcohol content over 80mg %
The driver will appear in Leduc Provincial Court on April 10th, 2014 at 09:30 a.m.
Integrated Traffic Units in the Province of Alberta consist of RCMP Traffic Services and Sheriff Highway Patrol officers working together in a collaborative effort to deliver effective and efficient traffic safety services to Albertans, with a focus on Identified enforcement priorities.
Teenage boy struck by car in Leduc
On March 4th. 2014 at 5:30 pm Leduc RCMP, Leduc Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a complaint of a Motor vehicle vs pedestrian collision at 4330 Blackgold Drive in the City of Leduc.
Investigation revealed a 16 year old male was walking North on the sidewalk along 43B Avenue and approached the intersection containing a Crosswalk. As the male activated the Crossing Lights he proceeded to cross Blackgold Drive in the crosswalk where he was struck by an east bound vehicle. As a result of the collision the 16 year old male sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
Road Conditions reported at the time of the collision was: snow-packed and icy sections. Speed and alcohol were not identified as factors. Numerous independent witnesses indicate when the pedestrian entered the crosswalk the vehicle was unable to stop in time. The name of the injured youth is not being released by Police.
Police remind all pedestrians and motorists to be cognizant of each other and to take the extra few seconds to ensure the path is clear for either walking or driving through an intersection. There are legal responsibilities at cross walks for both pedestrians and drivers!!
Ex-priest charged with Sexual Assault and Sexual Interference in Manning
Abraham AZHAKATHU, 59 years old of Manning, Alberta has been charged with Sexual Assault and Sexual Interference. AZHAKATHU was arrested on Friday March 8th and was released late Saturday afternoon (March 9th) after a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
The charges are as a result of a minor reporting the assaults that occurred during 2013, to RCMP in Manning, Details of the incidents are before the court, and no further information will be released. Protection of the minor's identity is paramount, and therefore, age and sex will not be released.
AZHAKATHU is a Catholic Priest who was practising in the Manning area during this period. He has been released on strict conditions to not be alone with anyone under the age of 16 and will reside outside of Manning and within the Province of Alberta.
It is unknown if there are other victims and the RCMP's investigation is ongoing.
AZHAKATHU's first court appearance is Monday March 17, 2014, at Peace River Provincial Court.
