CIB announces Pincher Mural project

  • Iconic Pincher Creek landmark to return
Pincher Mural (demolished 2008)
Communities In Bloom (CIB) Pincher Creek's committee recently gained permission from Town council to reproduce the iconic mural that once graced the side of Higa's Pharmacy at the northeast corner of Main Street and Bev McLachlin Drive. At that time it complemented the big blue “Pinchers” located across the street in Pincher Park.

Town council has agreed this mural can be placed on Library wall, facing east next to the main doors close to the library entrance. "This is the cheapest and best option at $6000," according to CIB board member John Hancock.

The original mural was created by Art Driedger and was commissioned by the Chamber of Economic Development in 1997. It graced the old Rexall building for 11 years. This mural was lost with the construction of a new Rexall building in 2008. It was themed after how the town got its name. It is shown above, and depicted the finding of a pair of pincers (a farrier’s tool for trimming horses’ hooves) in 1874.

As the story goes, the pincers were lost on the bank of the creek near the ford in 1868.

To raise the funds needed CIB Pincher Creek has announced the creation of The Pincher Creek Mural Fund.

"Our aim and motivation is make this a community effort, and would like local firms and businesses, plus local people to get behind this endeavor by making a small donation and putting their company or person name as part of the stakeholders."

"We are also putting together a committee that will look after the upkeep of the murals, repair after vandalism, and applying a protective coat at regular intervals."

"Most important is the endeavour to form a small group of local people that will maintain the towns various murals," said Hancock. "To achieve this we will need $6,000 to reinstall the Pinchers Mural, and $2,000 to start this fund of maintenance by recoating some nine murals with a UV varnish sealant on a five yearly basis."

"My involvement as a board member of Pincher Creek Communities in Bloom, is also enhanced by being a student of Ian Hills’ 'Becoming a Community Builder' course which ran recently. My commitment was to restore the Pinchers mural to the town and district of Pincher Creek."

"So far we have gained the town council approval to place this mural on a wall of the Town's property; e.g. the Library wall, thereby granting it a safe future. We have opened a bank account with ATB bank in Pincher Creek, and have received donations from prominent people such as my tutor Ian Hill and our Mayor Don Anderberg."

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement.
