"We are excited and optimistic about our partnership here," Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council (PCCALC) Coordinator Jenny Vandersteen told me after Administrative Assistant Annie Steward showed me around their new office and classroom at St. Michael's School.  "Today was our first official opening day, September 3."

PCCALC used to be located in the Ranchland Mall under the umbrella of Lethbridge Community College (LCC).  When LCC was forced to close their Pincher Creek campus due to budget cutbacks, PCCALC found a willing partner in St. Michael's School, enabling them to continue to provide a wide range of adult courses.  At St. Michael's they have a ground-floor classroom and a second floor office.

"We don't have any ties to the Lethbridge Campus anymore," Vandersteen explained, "but we will offer exam supervision services for those that need it."

"We are hoping that it all works out, and that people come to our open house, that's coming up end of September," said Vandersteen.  An exact date and time for the open house hasn't been set yet.

Their office hours are currently set at Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.

PCCALC provides instruction in Arts, Business, Computers and Finance, Gardening, Health and Wellness, Parenting, Public Legal, Recreation and Fitness, Safety and Firearms, and other topics, and also hosts a very popular Coffee and Conversation Group will continue to run Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Mrs. P's in the Ranchland Mall.  "That's open to anyone that wants to do a little bit of work on their English, whether they're Canadian, or newcomers," said Vandersteen.  "It's casual, we have coffee and a treat every Thursday."

"We work with a lot of seniors, and our parenting series is very popular with parents and kids.  We get a wide range of people from young boys who take hunter training, and getting their certification, to our senior computer sessions are very popular.  We get men and women of all ages."

Some of the instructors come from Lethbridge College, "but we try to use local skills and talent as much as possible".

"We are always looking for new instructors, if someone has a skill or expertise."

If you're interested in taking a course or learning more, PCCALC has a website at www.pincherlearn.ca with a wealth of information.  Paypal is also available on the website for those who want to pay for their course online.  "That's new and exciting," Vandersteen said.  "We will also have a drop box set up at the school's main office where people could come, fill out a form and leave a cheque."

"All of the courses are on the website, as well as the literacy information, and the Allied Arts courses.  For Allied Arts programs you have to register through them directly."

Calendars and registration forms will be available at the PCCALC booth at the Pincher Creek Trade Show, to be held this weekend on Friday September 6 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturday September 7 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
