The 2013 Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo was held last weekend.  The event is hosted every year by the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society.  The weather was perfect, sunny and warm throughout, the ground was a bit damp and therefore the dust was at a minimum.

The concession was run by local 4-H volunteers.  Pincher Creek Ambulance was on hand in case of emergencies.  Entertainment was provided by clown CrAsh Cooper at the rodeo and by the band Sweet Tequila at the Horseshoe Pavilion Cabaret.  ""It went great last night.  We reached our capacity of 800 people," said Cabaret organizer Dan Sibbald on Sunday afternoon.

The rodeo began with a Team Roping Jackpot on Thursday evening.  A Gymkhana was held Friday morning, with the pro rodeo events beginning Friday evening.  Saturday was parade day in Pincher Creek, with pro rodeo all afternoon.  The bulls won the day on Saturday, defeating every rider.  Top ranked Alberta Circuit bull rider Tanner Girletz from Cereal Alberta had a great crowd-pleasing ride, but was unfortunately disqualified like everyone else.

Novice bareback rider Dantan Bertsch's 69 point ride put him at the top of the Pincher Creek standings.

Sunday was family day.

Robin Reeve
Sunday's entertainments started with a Pincher Creek Extreme Cowboy Trail Club demo.  Heidi Eijgel, Janet Watmough and Robin Reeve put their horses through a number of challenges designed to simulate circumstances that they would encounter on a trail or during ranch work.  Some of the challenges included a rocking bridge, a mattress and pop bottles on the ground, dragging a sack of rattling pop cans, a slalom course, picking up a belled strap, picking up a predator skin, flags and a challenging gate. "This improves your horsemanship, and fosters trust and confidence with your horse," explained Robin Reeve.

There weren't a lot of locals in the Pro Rodeo this year.  The team of Lucas Michalsky (Pincher Creek) and  Otys Little Mustache (Piikani Nation) shared 5/6 place in the team roping event. Bobby Peters (Pincher Creek) shared 5/6/7 place in the bareback event.   He's currently ranked 7th in the Kenton Randle Bareback Series.

Rimbey’s Dean Edge had a great weekend, participating in three rodeos, including Pincher Creek where his 8.3 second tie down roping run earned him 4th place and contributed $855 towards his weekend total of $2,425.

The big Pro Rodeo events were punctuated all weekend by mutton busting, calf scrambles, flag rides, presentations, CrAsh Cooper, trick rider Emily Peebles, and a constant stream of patter from the announcing booth.

Below you'll find the complete (unofficial) results of the 2013 Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo, plus some national stats on some of our local rodeo stars.
