Pincher Creek's Third Annual Community 4 on 4 Road Hockey Festival was held on Saturday, June 29 at the Memorial Community Centre Arena parking lot.  Parent Link sponsored the event, which was once again very successful.

"I'd say in total we had about 30 playing hockey, and about 45 between younger siblings," said organizer Jacqui Bruns.  "Minor Hockey does give us some money, but it doesn't cost a lot of money."  Bruns explained that a $5.00 registration fee charges to participants went towards rent of the facility. "At the end of the day, we pretty much break even."

"Some of the kids here don't play on any other teams, and they'd love to.  This gives them a chance to come out, play on a hockey team, and just have fun.  Anytime you get kids together, parents together, it's that community building that we all need."

"It's all for the love of the sport."

Participants came from Pincher Creek and surrounding area, Crowsnest Pass, with some from as far away as Calgary. "They come down and visit their grandparents," Bruns explained. "They came last year, and they came the year before.  So now they work it into their holiday plans."

"It's a fun community event getting kids out, off the couch, away from video games.  We're showing them that it's still fun.  We do have a lot to compete with nowadays as parents."

Two rinks were sectioned off in the parking lot, and were full from 10:00 am to about 3:00 pm. There were activities for kids not playing hockey in the Early Childhood Mapping crafts area.  Hats off to some of the older kids who acted as referees for the event, and did so with good humour and panache.

In the arena lobby Minor Hockey was taking registrations for the 2013-2014 season. Even though this was the specified day to register, registration packages are still available from Wendy at 403-627-5755.  Pincher Creek Minor Hockey is still looking for more help as well. "We are still looking for volunteers for positions, including Registrar, Referee, Chief Ice Scheduler, Vice President, and Development," said Minor Hockey VP Tara Cryderman.

Howdy neighbors!
The Pincher Creek Voice is excited to anticipate new neighbours after ParentLink announced last week that they will be moving into part of the space recently vacated by Lethbridge College in the Ranchland Mall.
