"We gotta clean up this town," echoed through my memory in a drawl straight from some forgotten western movie.  At least, that is what reverberated in my mind when I saw kids out in force on Thursday  May 9, 2013 by Canyon School with gloves and garbage bags.

This is the new west, filled with environmentally conscious civic minded  children and teachers that chose to help clean up garbage in conjunction with Pitch In Canada.

"I think it's a fantastic idea," said Assistant Principal Kirby Dietz. "It brings us together as a community."

The students have been learning about environmental impacts like littering, recycling and water conservation in the classroom.   Another important aspect that they have been discussing is volunteering in their community.  Now was a day to show it.  Kindergarten to grade six participated in 'Operation Clean Up' picking up litter in designated areas both on and off the school grounds.

The school partnered with the Town of Pincher Creek who supplied bags and gloves as part of the Pitch In cleanup program .

In the westerns, life was better when they cleaned up the town.  The operation may have been different, but the goal is the same: A cleaner, safer, happier community with citizens that take pride in their community.

Good job and thank you to those kids that took out the trash.
