Assault with a vehicle near Red Deer

Innisfail RCMP

At approximately 03:45 hrs on the morning of the 20th, a lone adult male was caught by homeowners on their isolated rural property attempting to steal gas. The residence/farm is located southeast of Red Deer in the Innisfail RCMP Detachments area. The male suspect was confronted and was located in a white Honda CR-V. The property owner attempted to apprehend the suspect who stated he was just trying to take gas and was high on methamphetamine. When this confrontation occurred, the suspect fled accelerating away in the vehicle with the property owner being dragged from the drivers side window for some distance and ultimately being run over. During this confrontation other family members were coming to assist. As the suspect fled the scene he was followed by the son of the property owner in another vehicle. This then led to a second scene on Hwy 42 heading towards Penhold, Alberta, with the suspect vehicle ramming the son four times and causing considerable damage to both vehicles. The suspect then continued to flee towards Penhold and the son followed. In Penhold then the suspect ran off the road and was blocked in by the son. As the suspect then attempted to flee on foot the son apprehended and detained him calling for police to attend. It was then confirmed the Honda CR-V was stolen and had a stolen licence plate on it as well.

Innisfail RCMP were first called to the scene of the residence and then redirected to Penhold, where they took the suspect into custody. The suspect was then identified as:

Raven Joseph BEAVERBONES (19 years old).

The property owners have lived in the area for some time and are identified as the SCOTT's, Norm SCOTT and his son Richard.

Norm SCOTT was transported to the Red Deer Regional Hospital by his wife, from the scene. He was treated and released later that afternoon. His injuries include fairly severe road rash with significant scrapes to his chest, legs, shoulder and his chin. There was a laceration to his eye and the loss of a fingernail to his right hand. As well, there was treatment for a possible concussion with some memory loss.

No other injuries are reported from the second collision.

BEAVERBONES was charged with a 13 count information and held for court on Monday Sept 22nd in the morning. Charges included Assault with a weapon (Motor vehicle), Dangerous Driving, Trespass at Night, Theft, Possessing Stolen Property, Failing to Remain at the scene of a Collision, Obstruction and multiple breaches of Probation and a recent previous release document (Recognizance).

The investigation continues to be ongoing at this time by the Innisfail RCMP Detachment.

The suspect and victims were known to each other.

RCMP immediately set up a perimeter and called Police Dog Services in to assist in locating the suspect. A patrolling RCMP member located the suspect a short time later in the Riverside Meadows neighbourhood.

Alcohol fueled collision on QEII

Innisfail RCMP

On September 21, 2014 shortly after 6:00 pm, emergency crews were called to a two vehicle injury collision which was affecting traffic in both directions on the QEII Highway near Old Pole Road, just north of Innisfail, Alberta.

Photo is from the noted collision. The two vehicles in the foreground are bystanders who stopped to assist. The green car within the cable barrier in the background is the "small green sedan" referred to in the main body of the release.

Police from Innisfail RCMP and the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit responded along with EMS and the Innisfail Fire department.

Witnesses reported to police that a small green sedan had lost control while attempting to make a lane change. When the vehicle lost control it struck another vehicle before crossing into the median and striking the cable barrier. The cable barrier system remained intact and prevented the vehicle from encroaching into oncoming traffic.

EMS treated several occupants, including two children who were riding in the green sedan, for minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation, the 28 year old female driver from Calgary, was charged under the Traffic Safety Act and was issued a 30 day licence suspension for the presence of alcohol under the Alberta Zero Alcohol Tolerance Program (AZAT) for GDL/Novice Drivers. A passenger was also taken into police custody on an unrelated matter.

Both north bound and south bound traffic was reduced to a single lane for approximately one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed a passenger vehicle travelling south bound with 7 occupants on board, left the driving lanes and rolled into the ditch. 7 occupants were involved in the collision, 5 of which were transported by ground ambulance to Ponoka, while the remaining two were transported by STARS to Edmonton, with critical injuries. As a result of this collision, both north bound lanes were closed for approximately 2 hours, as well, the south bound lanes were reduced to one lane. An RCMP traffic reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation and the cause of the collision is still under investigation. Both north and south bound lanes of the QEII at Ponoka are now open.

2 vehicle collision on QEII sends rider to hospital

On September 21, 2014 shortly after 8:00 pm, emergency crews were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on the QEII Highway just south of Red Deer.

Police from the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit and Red Deer Emergency Services attended the scene and treated the male rider for injuries sustained in the collision.

Witnesses reported to police that a north bound sedan lost control and struck the cable barrier. The cable barrier system remained intact and prevented the vehicle from encroaching into oncoming traffic. The occupants in the sedan were not injured. Several minutes later, a motorcycle with one rider, struck the disabled vehicle.

The rider was transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the sedan that initially lost control was charged under the Traffic Safety Act.

The north bound lanes of the QEII Highway were affected for approximately one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene.

Neither speed nor alcohol are factors in this collision and police would like to again caution motorists to slow down and ensure sufficient space is left between moving vehicles.

RCMP take Dalhousie coaching workshop

RCMP Alberta Media Relations

The city of St. Albert hosted an innovative police coaching course for 24 police officers from throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and Bermuda over the weekend. RCMP officers, Alberta Sheriffs, the Town of Rocky Mountain House Enforcement Services and 2 officers from the Bermuda Reserve Police Service, attended this 3 day workshop to learn how to coach law enforcement officers to success.

Ted Herbert, Retired Police Officer and Course instructor, Inspector Shawn Russell, Bermuda Reserve Police Service, Sgt. Carolyn Cameron, St. Albert RCMP, Deputy Commandant Ron-Michel Davis, Bermuda Reserve Police Service, and Dr. Merry Miller, Sports and Performance Psychologist and Course Instructor.

The Managing Police Performance Coaching Skills for Police Supervisors workshop is one course that can lead to a certificate in the Police leadership program at the Dalhousie University of Halifax. This Police Leadership course is based on sports coaching principles. Great coaches in sport have helped athletes excel for decades. Police personnel can use these same techniques to enhance their performance and leadership.

Learning to coach police officers using principles from sports provides a process to facilitate enhanced performance enabling officers to reach their personal and organizational objectives. "When police officers perform more effectively, the overall service is stronger which creates a safer community," said Dr. Merry Miller, a Sports and Performance Psychologist and one of the workshop instructors.

"Policing in the new millennium is a challenging career." says Sgt. Carolyn Cameron, the Non Commissioned Officer in Charge of the St. Albert RCMP Support Units. "As a supervisor in the RCMP, it is important to coach our officers to maximize their skills and performance in order to maintain the level of excellence the RCMP is famous for." Sgt. Cameron worked closely with Superintendent Howard Eaton, the Officer in Charge of the RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit, to bring this sought after workshop to St. Albert.

The coaching principles taught on this course are applicable throughout policing - even in Bermuda. This country that has approximately 65,000 people living on an island that is about 22 square kilometres, embraces cutting edge policing techniques and community service. Bermuda has 2 paid police services that work jointly to serve the needs of their Island. The Bermuda Police Service handles Criminal investigations and have 450 officers on strength. The Bermuda Reserve Police Service, with a strength of 100 officers, investigates all matters that are not criminal in nature.

The Bermuda Reverse Police Service researched programs that would help their supervisors improve leadership skills. They selected the Dalhousie University Police Leadership program as a fit for their needs. "The community expects motivated, skilled police officers answering their calls. Strong coaches leading the police officers will ensure that the community receives the level of service they want and need." said Deputy Commandant Ron-Michel Davis of the Bermuda Reserve Police Service.

Thunderbird Show and Shine this weekend in St. Albert

Edmonton Police Service

Every day, advocates within the EPS Victim Services Unit respond to families in distress dealing with tragedy. And often, the simple and loving gesture of presenting a traumatized child with a new teddy bear to clutch can be a calming influence, during an otherwise traumatic situation.

With this in mind, the Edmonton Thunderbird Club will host its annual Teddy Bear Collection drive for the Edmonton Police Service Victim Services Unit on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., during its annual classic car Show and Shine.

“I can’t emphasize enough what a small gesture it really is in the grand scheme of things, but what a meaningful thing it is to a young child, who may suffering from trauma and in a state of shock,” said Wes Armstrong, VSU Coordinator for EPS Downtown Division.

“Last year, through the generosity of the public, more than 800 teddy bears were donated during the car club’s annual Show and Shine. This year, we’re hoping we can raise more than 1,000 teddy bears, which are always in high demand throughout our unit.”

The 2014 Edmonton Thunderbird Club Show and Shine is being held in the parking lot of the St. Albert A & W Restaurant located in the Gateway Village shopping Centre, at St. Albert Trail and Hebert Road.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring down a teddy bear to this year’s Show and Shine, which usually fill up several of the classic cars.
