Each year on February 22, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world celebrate World Thinking Day. Girl Guides of Canada members use this day as an opportunity to participate in activities and projects with global themes, learn and take action on important issues facing girls around the world, and fundraise to support the Canadian World Friendship Fund. The themes for World Thinking Day 2013 are "together we can save children's lives" and "every mother’s life and health is precious." (www.girlguides.ca)
Traditionally, each year, Chinook Area Girl Guides delivers “gifts for babies” to the Chinook Regional Hospital to be presented to baby girls born during Guide-Scout week. Each gift includes a teddy bear and a gift certificate for the child to join Girl Guides (“Sparks”) when she turns five years old.
Xara Florence received one of these gift certificates the day she came into the world five years ago. There is something special about Xara's birthdate... she was born on Feb 22! This is the birthday of Lord and Lady Baden Powell, the founders of Scouting and Guiding. Xara is now enrolled as a Spark in a Lethbridge unit.
Activities that support World Thinking Day 2013 will continue throughout the week of February 17-24 as girls all over Canada put their goals into action.
About Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada
Since 1910, Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) has been a trailblazing movement advocating for girls and women, while offering them opportunities to discover new interests and develop leadership skills. Throughout its history, Guiding has prepared girls to meet the challenges they face. Today’s girls can learn about global and cultural awareness, career exploration, science and technology and the arts. They work on environmental projects and explore important issues such as cyber-bullying, self-esteem and body image, and develop the skills needed to speak out and take action on issues that are important to them. Guiding enables girls to be confident, courageous and resourceful, and to make a difference in the world.
