This Friday evening, September 21, at 5 pm, Pincher Creek's Senior Mustangs will take to the Matthew Halton field to vie with the Taber Rebels for the Division B Championship.  In a season full of firsts for the Mustangs, this is the next one.  They've never won the division before, in fact they've never even come close, but stand a very good chance this year.

Kory Geddes has been a major player in his teams success this year.  A Mustangs wide-side Linebacker and Fullback, Geddes was unfortunately sidelined by a leg injury sustained in the game against Chinook on October 11, the Mustangs only loss in regular season, that also saw two other team members sustain significant injury.  He told me his leg, which was initially thought to be broken, sustained some serious tendon damage, and might have to undergo surgery, depending on how it heals.  Geddes was very upbeat about his team's chances, and intends to be there cheering them on the whole way to Provincials.  "I'm in grade 11," he said, after being asked if it was disappointing to be forced to sit out the big games.  "I can play again next year."

From being the also-ran team of their division the Mustangs have grown into the team to beat this year, even attracting the attention of Global news, who were represented by Paul Kingsworth at Thursday's practice.   Kingsworth interviewed Mustangs Coach Dennis Sokownin, who humbly placed a lot of credit for the incredible season the Mustangs have thus far experienced at the feet of his fellow coaches Peter Brannen and Wayne Alexander.  After the big interview, while obviously eager to get back to his team, Sokownin shared a few words about the Mustangs' immediate future.   "The boys are confident enough to take the trophy," he said.  "Our guys are ready.  In my opinion it's going to be 'Rock 'em sock 'em' football out there."

If The Senior Mustangs win the Friday game against the Rebels, they get a bye next week, when Claresholm plays W.R. Myers.  Then they will play the victors of that game the week following, scheduled for Friday, November 7 in Lethbridge.  The winners of that game go on to play in the Provincial finals.

The Mustangs can do it this year, they've already proven they have the stuff of champions flowing in their veins.  Come out Friday night and cheer them on, it's going to be exciting football.
